Fletcher's playing career has been put on an indefinite hiatus since last November due to severe ulcerative colitis and there has been no suggestion of him returning to the team in the preseason training.
When asked about the future of the midfielder, Ferguson revealed that Fletcher is still acive in the club - as a coach - and will remain as a United player for the forseeable future.
"We'll wait and see about that. Obviously the boy is trying very hard to get back to his level.
"It's not going to be easy but we'll give him every possible chance and we'll see how it goes.
"He kept himself active towards the end of the season when he replaced Paul Scholes as reserves coach when Scholes decided to come back as a player.
"Darren's a terrific lad and we all hope he can come back."
Manchester United begin their 2012/2013 Premier League campaign on 18 August against Everton at Goodison Park.
