With club captain Carles Puyol becoming more injury-prone with age, Barcelona are on the hunt for a younger, talented central defender to partner Gerard Pique at the back. The Catalan side's interest in AC Milan's Thiago Silva is well-documented, but the Rossoneri insist they will not be parting with the Brazilian.

Barcelona management have grown frustrated with Milan thwarting their attempts to sign the former Fluminese player and are now contemplating a move for his compatriot Luiz. Reknowned for his characteristic forays from the back, Luiz has impressed the Spanish side's coaching staff, who believe the former Benfica man would adapt well in their distinctive style of possession football.

However, with Chelsea not lacking in finances, it appears to be seen if the Blues will enter discussions with Barcelona over the defender. The Catalan club are expected to make a bid of 35 million Euros for Luiz this summer.
