Spending the season on-loan with AC Milan from Liverpool, Aquilani made 23 appearances for the Rossoneri but only managed to get on the score-sheet once. The Italian club have revealed that they will not be taking up the option to sign Aquilani permanently as of this time, though Milan CEO Adriano Galliani hinted that the club might do so if they miss out on other transfer targets.
With the Reds likely to confirm the appointment of Brendan Rodgers as their new manager this weekend, Aquilani is anxious to return to Anfield and establish talks with the English club regarding his future.
"It's necessary to understand if there are the foundations for an agreement that satisfies everyone," he said to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"I'm waiting for Liverpool to decide on the identity of their new coach and reorganise themselves. Then we will have to meet in order to figure out their plans."
The midfielder is aware the discussions that could ensue over the next few weeks could have severe repercussions on his playing career, but Aquilani is clear on his expectations.
"The only thing I can do is make the right decision. For me, it is important to have the opportunity to make a contribution, to play well and regularly," he stated.
