Smalling wants to score against Reds

Manchester United's Chris Smalling is eager to be passed fit and take the field against Liverpool this weekend.

The Englishman is not only looking to help his team get the win, but would also like to join the list of Manchester United defenders that have scored against the Merseysiders. Former Red Devils Wes Brown and Mikael Silvestre, as well as current defensive stalwart Rio Ferdinand have netted against Liverpool at Old Trafford. John O'Shea and Gary Pallister have put their names on the score sheet during previous away clashes.

"I’m definitely working hard on my role at corners and free-kicks in order to make an impact," he said to Inside United.

"When I joined, one or two of the coaches pointed out that they were looking for goals from the centre-halves. Obviously Nemanja Vidic scores a few and if you can add goals to your armoury it’s a massive plus point."

Smalling is no stranger to scoring against Manchester United rivals, having done so against both Chelsea and Manchester City this season.

"Hopefully I’ll keep finding the net and contribute a bit more in the future. I don’t want us to be relying all the time on the strikers for goals," the centre-back shared.

Keeping the Liverpool strikers at bay will remain Smalling's top priority when the Reds visit Old Trafford for this Saturday's Premier League clash.
