The 37-year-old retired at the end of last season after helping United to their 19th league title last season.
But according to The Sun newspaper, Scholes could make a sensational return to United - just six months after hanging up his boots.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side have been struggling for inspiration and creativity in midfield this season and are in a mini crisis after two back-to-back defeats in the league.
Scholes, who currently trains with the United reserves as well as coaches them, shares the concern with his side's worrying form of late.
And the United legend is reportedly willing to answer the call should Ferguson requires his help.
Ferguson has previously insisted that Scholes had another season in him - like Ryan Giggs - but could not convince the midfielder to extend his stay.
The Scot could well get his wish now.
