The Belgium international suffered the injuries in a clash with Emile Heskey during the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at the end of October.
The 23-year-old is expected to be sidelined for around two months but has revealed the injuries are currently preventing him from doing even the lightest of training.
The Black Cats stopper said: "I can't do anything. I can't keep up my fitness and it is frustrating.
"I can't even ride a bike, as I get headaches and nosebleeds. I did not take offence at Heskey but goalkeepers need protecting."
