Gerrard came off the bench in Saturday's game to mark his first appearance for the club following a six-month absence.
After the game, Kelly was left in no doubt the skipper's inclusion in the team helped the Reds cross the line with all three points from their Barclays Premier League encounter with a plucky Wolves side.
"It was good to get back to winning ways [in the league] and I think we needed the three points," Kelly told Liverpoolfc.tv.
"We had the fans behind us and the return of Stevie especially lifted the crowd. We're happy with the win."
Liverpool took the lead at Anfield when Roger Johnson deflected Charlie Adam's shot into his own net before Luis Suarez added a killer second goal.
Saturday's win over Wolves came at a crucial time for the Reds who play Everton in the Merseyside side derby this weekend.
The Reds had suffered successive Premier League defeats prior to their 2-1 win over Wolves.
