According to reports in the Sun, sources in the Merseyside club have revealed that the midfielder could be the victim of the club's spending spree on players in his position.
Liverpool brought in Stewart Downing from Aston Villa, Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, and Charlie Adam from Blackpool for a combined £49 million, and manager Kenny Dalglish will have to cull the squad in order to make space for his new signings.
As it is, there is already a surplus of midfielders at the club, with Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole, Raul Meireles, Alberto Aquilani, Christian Poulsen, Maxi Rodriquez, Jonjo Shelvey, Jay Spearing and Milan Jovanovic all fighting for a starting spot.
Lucas has already expressed his unhappiness with the situation.
According to sources, the 24-year-old is on his way out of the club, one revealed:"Lucas only signed a new deal in March and was voted Player of the Year by the fans.
"But the word is he is leaving and that will shock a lot of people, especially after he played so well last season."
