Woodward worry over Man United finances

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will reveal second quarter results on Wednesday.

Woodward is due to speak with investors about the results, which will continue their upward trend on 12 months ago.

It would be a major surprise if Woodward was not quizzed about the possibility of United failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 1995.

Red Devils officials have privately in the past suggested the club's financial situation was robust enough to survive a year outside Europe's number one club competition.

However, rather than a possibility, that situation has become a probability, with David Moyes' side now nine points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool following Sunday's 2-2 draw with Fulham.

In the 2012-13 campaign, when United were beaten in the first knockout round by Real Madrid, they earned £31.3million in Champions League broadcasting revenue.

In addition, their four home games net approximately £16million in gate receipts and corporate income.

Although United could still qualify for the Europa League, the rewards are miniscule in comparison and, depending when they have to enter the competition, could also cause havoc with their pre-season plans, which include a lucrative eight-team tournament in the United States.

United would also find it harder to sign top players to bolster Moyes' squad, whilst their commercial department, which has presided over such enormous growth, may experience difficulty persuading potential partners to invest the same sums in the Old Trafford outfit if they were no longer regarded as a contender for major prizes.

It has however, already been confirmed the club have pegged season ticket prices for the fifth successive year.

"It has been a testing time so far for the Reds this season, but the fans' passion has been unwavering as the Reds look to rebuild under David Moyes," said the club, confirming the price freeze.
