Kevin Strootman was initially rumoured to join Old Trafford before he was placed in the ranks of the current Serie A leaders in July in a deal worth €17 million.
Dick Advocaat, PSV’s previous in-charge, believes that Strootman’s reputation as a strong, physical playmaker may have put the Netherlands international well on course to play for the Red Devils.
“Strootman is a pure professional,” Advocaat told press recently.
“It frankly surprised me that he did not get to the absolute top last summer and was on the side a little.
“I do not think he will stay at Roma that long. If Kevin is at this level, he will be plucked away.
“And then it will be a team of the calibre of Manchester United.”
The 66-year old Dutch manager worked closely with Strootman at PSV last season, and firmly believes that the midfielder’s talent will prove useful to major clubs anywhere in the world.
He joined PSV with fellow Utrecht recruit Dries Mertens and he made his debut for the team in a 3-1 home win against AZ, and continued to make a total of 88 appearances for the side from Philips Stadion.
