Szczesny has established himself as the Gunners' first-choice between the posts since making his Barclays Premier League debut back in 2010 against Manchester United, but found himself on the bench in the closing stages of last term after a series of unimpressive displays.

However, the Poland international has since reclaimed his position in Wenger's starting XI and believes his manager made the right choice in dropping him.

"Obviously I had mixed feelings about my form last season," he said on the club's official website. "I had my ups and downs.

"It wasn't nice [to be left out] - you want to be playing every week. But then again, the most important thing is the team and that is what the team needed.

"Lukasz [Fabianski] was in better shape at that moment in time, he came in and did really well.

"I worked really hard to get back into the team and when I did I thought I did pretty well. It was [a] good decision by the manager."

Szczesny reveals the secret to him reclaiming his number one status was down to sheer hard work in training, and is hoping he can continue in that vein in the coming months.

"I worked on my fitness and sharpness and came in much earlier every day to work in the gym with the fitness coach and the physios," he explained.

"There was a lot of stuff to be done. I realised I wasn't in the best shape, but it all worked out pretty well.

"Hopefully I can be the club's number one this season."

The 23-year-old also admitted that it was vital that Arsenal end their hunt for silverware in the 2013/14 campaign.

"I want to win a trophy for this club because that is what is missing in my career," Szczesny added. "And I'm sure it is what the fans have been missing.

"It's a big season."

Szczesny faces extra competition for a spot in the Gunners starting XI this season following the summer arrival of Italy international Emiliano Viviano on loan from Palermo.
