Ricky hopes to hit goal trail

Club-record signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel will gladly take plenty more scrappy goals as he looks to fire Norwich up the Barclays Premier League.

The £8million summer transfer from Sporting Lisbon finally got off the mark for his new club when he netted from close range on his home debut against Champions League play-off hopefuls Real Sociedad at Carrow Road, deflecting Leroy Fer's powerful near-post header past the goalkeeper.

While it may not have been the most crisp of finishes from the Holland international, he is determined it will not be the last time he wheels away in celebration over the coming months as Chris Hughton's men look to stay well clear of the relegation dogfight in 2013/14.

"It went in off my left leg, but I am here to score goals like that, a typical striker's goal. it does not really matter how you hit it, I was a bit lucky, but I was in the right position," van Wolfswinkel said on BBC Radio Norfolk.

"It was a great feeling to play here at Carrow Road, and I am looking forward to more games like this."

Hughton has targeted plenty of attacking reinforcement over the summer, bringing in Gary Hooper from Celtic and England under-21 winger Nathan Redmond from Birmingham, and continues to be linked with veteran Juventus striker Fabio Quagliarella.

The Norwich manager, who has brought in half-a-dozen new faces, said: "We will continue to work hard to try to do something if it is right, if it is not, then we have got a good squad here at this particular moment."

England goalkeeper John Ruddy sat out last night's 1-1 draw with a minor back injury, but is expected to return for the Canaries' final pre-season fixture against Panathinaikos.

Midfielder Anthony Pilkington, though, could be doubtful for the Premier League opener against Everton after being forced out of the Republic of Ireland squad for next week's friendly with Wales in Cardiff.

Hughton confirmed: "We are just managing a slight problem with his knee at this moment in time.

"Anthony is another one who did the first part of pre-season and he did very well. Of course when it came round to these most recent period of games we have not been able to use him, but we are hopeful that he is going to be training next week and to push on from there."

Centre-back Sebastien Bassong is also a major concern, having not featured in pre-season at all following an operation on his knee.
