Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot believes it’s unfair towards the players to question whether the squad has enough quality to compete in the Premier League.
The Magpies have suffered two defeats in their first top-flight games since winning promotion from the Championship last season, against Tottenham and Huddersfield, leading to speculation over whether or not they have a squad capable of staying up.
Manager Rafael Benitez has himself questioned if he has the right players to consolidate Newcastle’s position as a Premier League club. However, Elliot feels it’s unfair on the squad, who have been looking forward to the challenge.
He said, according to Sky Sports: “With the stories flying around – (we) haven’t got enough, (we) have got enough – I don’t think it’s very fair on the squad.
“They did such a terrific job last year and we’ve brought in some good players. We just wanted it to be about looking forward to the Premier League season, unfortunately, it’s not been that.”
