Gunners legend gives Onyekuru his backing

Henry Onyekuru

Former Arsenal marksman Ian Wright has told Nigerian forward Henry Onyekuru to prove any doubters wrong, should his move to the Emirates go through.

It's believed that once Onyekuru agrees to personal terms, he will be signed for £6.8m by the north London club.

The 19-year-old former Aspire Academy product spent last season in the Belgium top flight, bagging 24 goals in 41 appearances for a struggling Eupen side.

It has been reported however that some Arsenal supporters do not feel the Nigerian is not quite worthy of the club.

But Wright, second on the Gunners' all-time top scorers list behind Thierry Henry, had to face similar criticism from fans when he arrived from Crystal Palace for £2.5m in 1991. And he has urged Onyekuru to prove the doubters wrong:

"Remember watching the news when I signed for Arsenal, fans said 'why we signing him'. Good luck to you Henry. I found the way to shut them up," the former England international striker stated on Twitter.

Onyekuru is said to have turned down offers from Belgian giants Brugge and Anderlecht, with Everton, Southampton, West Ham, West Brom and Celtic also reportedly interested.
