With a considerable 15 point lead at the top of the Premier League table, Manchester United are expected to reclaim the Premier League title from neighbours Manchester City at the end of the season.
Robson told United Review that the inclusion of Robin van Persie for this campaign was integral in the Red Devils' impressive performance, but there were two other players also deserving of recognition.
"Obviously, the way Robin van Persie has come into the club from Arsenal and the way he has played makes him a strong candidate, but I believe Michael Carrick and Rafael are both running him very close," he said.
Praising Carrick for his consistency and pointing out how much Rafael had improved over the course of the season, the former United skipper believed it would not be easy to choose between the three candidates.
"Michael has had a great season and it speaks volumes that Sir Alex [Ferguson] has played him in more or less all our games. He is a very intelligent footballer and has done excellently all season," Robson stated.
"Rafael has really progressed and has had a great campaign as well, so it's a close call between those three, for me."
