European Football Monday Round-up
We round up the best of the footballing action across selected leagues in Europe.
Portuguese Primeira Liga
Amido Balde scored a valuable late winner for the 10 men of Guimaraes as they claimed a 3-2 away victory over Vitoria Setubal to stay in the Europa League picture.
The visitors had squandered a 2-0 lead following the 78th-minute dismissal of goalkeeper Renato Douglas but Balde popped up at the death to claim three points that lift them to sixth, level with fifth-placed Rio Ave in the last of the European places.
El Arbi Soudani put the visitors ahead in the 28th minute and Issam El Adoua doubled the advantage with 17 minutes remaining.
The game turned when Douglas was sent off for a foul in the area, and although Cristiano missed the resulting penalty moments after coming on as a substitute, the hosts levelled with two goals in four minutes from Ariza Makukula and Pedro Santos.
Danish Superliga
FC Nordsjaelland ended the weekend 14 points off the Superliga summit and looking over their shoulders after being held to a 1-1 draw away to FC Midtjylland.
Uffe Bech put the visitors ahead three minutes before the break, but Mads Albaek's 70th-minute strike denied them the win.
With FC Copenhagen having beaten Silkeborg 3-1 on Sunday to extend their considerable advantage at the top, Nordsjaelland may now be more concerned with third-placed Randers, just two points behind in the battle for Champions League football having beaten Sonderjyske 2-0 on Friday.
Turkish Super Lig
Europa League hopefuls Kasimpasa were denied victory in the Turkish Super Lig on Monday evening as bottom side Mersin Idmanyurdu hit back to salvage a 1-1 draw.
Kalu Uche put the visitors ahead after 28 minutes, but Marcio Nobre equalised from the penalty spot a quarter of an hour from time.
It left fourth-placed Kasimpasa six points adrift of Besiktas in third, while Mersin Idmanyurdu remained rooted in the relegation zone.
Greek Superleague
A solitary second-half goal was sufficient for Panionios to claim a narrow 1-0 win over Atromitos in the Greek Superleague.
Leonidas Kampantais struck with a little more than half an hour remaining for the hosts, who leapfrogged Levadiakos in mid-table courtesy of the victory.
Defeat meant Atromitos remained eight points behind PAOK Salonika in fourth.
