Loyola survive scare; Kaya bounce back

Loyola Meralco Sparks survived a real scare on Tuesday to beat Pachanga Diliman 1-0 and pick up their second straight win of the 2013 United Football League season.

Having got the campaign off to a flying start last week with a 4-1 triumph over Philippine Army, the Sparks were expected to see off their opponents at McKinley Hill.

22 minutes in, they duly took the lead when Phil Younghusband, returning to the side after missing their opening game through international duty, laid on a pass for Freddie Gonzalez to convert against his former team.

Loyola continued to carve out their fair share of chances after the break but they just failed to double their advantage, with South Korean imports Jeong Byeong-yeol and Jang Joo-wong but guilty of wasting decent opportunities.

Buoyed by their opponents' profligate ways, Pachanga began to grow in confidence and soon launched an all-out assault on the Sparks goal.

However, despite coming close through efforts from Yves Ashime, Jason Cunliffe and Andres Gonzales, they were unable to find the equaliser as Loyola held on for all three points.

In Tuesday's evening kick-off, Kaya bounced back their 1-0 defeat to Pachanga by recording a last-gasp 2-1 win over Green Archers United.

Kaya took the lead in the 27th minute through OJ Porteria, who also scored for Philippines in last week's 1-0 friendly win over Myanmar.

Nonetheless, the Archers looked to have earned a share of the spoils right at the death when Christian Pasilan netted with a deflected effort, only for Janrick Soriano to bag the winner in the fourth minute of injury time and hand his side maximum points.
