The Real Madrid coach has flirted with the idea of replacing Ferguson at United and has been open about his desire to return to England.

Furthermore, he has a strained relationship with both the media as well as the club management in Madrid which seems to suggest that the Portuguese will likely not stay on after the end of his contract, due to expire in 2016.

Schmeichel, however, does not feel that Mourinho's presence at Old Trafford would be desirable. The ex-Chelsea coach has been one of the most successful coaches in recent memory but has also earned the unsavoury reputation of being an outspoken, confrontational and arrogant individual.

Thinking along these lines, the United legend told El Mundo: "He [Mourinho] will not be the successor. I don't think the club would be happy with everything Mourinho brings with him."

"He's a great candidate for his qualities as a manager but the club doesn't want all the things that come with him."

Mourinho will get a chance to prove his credentials when Real side host United in the Champions League last-16 first leg on Wednesday.
