Alaba deservedly earned the plaudits after he inspired Die Roten to their win over Schalke, scoring a brace and performing magnificently in defence as the Bavarian giants stretched their lead at the top of the table to a massive 15 points.

The 20-year-old, who graduated from Bayern's youth academy, has had been one of the most consistent performers for the club this season, and the Austria international claimed he was pleased to have found the back of the net on Saturday.

"It's obviously terrific," Alaba told the official Bayern Website.

"This kind of thing doesn't happen to me every day, so I'm delighted."

When asked what he, a defender, was doing in the opposition penalty area, Alaba said: "I asked myself the same thing.

"It was a case of following an instinct.

"All I do is try and give it my best, but I know I have to improve in so many areas."

Despite the commanding lead Die Roten currently hold in the Bundesliga, Alaba warned that the title has not been won yet and urged his team-mates not to lose focus in their upcoming fixtures.

"It was an important victory," Alaba added.

Once again, we did superbly as a team.

"But we mustn't allow ourselves to be knocked off course now.

"We have to keep it up and concentrate on the essentials. If we do, it's looking good for us."

Bayern will take on Wolfsburg in their next Bundesliga fixture.
