European Football Sunday Round-up

Marseille finished the match with nine men and failed to take advantage of struggling opposition as a 1-1 draw with Evian saw them continue a poor run with their challenge at the top of Ligue 1 faltering.

Things had looked good for the visitors, who started the match in third place, when Andre-Pierre Gignac put them ahead five minutes after the break.

However, the lead lasted just eight minutes before Yannick Sagbo levelled from the spot after Kassim Abdallah had fouled Saber Khelifa, with the defender also given a straight red card as the last man.

Marseille's miserable afternoon continued 15 minutes from time when Jordan Ayew was sent off after being awarded his second yellow card and they have now taken just two points from three games and find themselves eight points behind leaders Paris St Germain.

Lyon are now six points off top spot after suffering a surprise 3-1 home loss to Lille.

Aurelien Chedjou headed the visitors in front after 28 minutes and they doubled their advantage through Florent Balmont seconds before the break, converting Lyon coach Remi Garde's half-time address into crisis talks.

But whatever he said did little good as Salomon Kalou fired in a penalty five minutes into the second half.

Lisandro Lopez got one back from the penalty spot seven minutes later but nothing would come for Les Gones in open play and Lille saw the game out.

In the day's other game, two late goals by Romain Alessandrini and Mevlut Erding guided Rennes to their first victory in three games as they beat Toulouse 2-0.

Turkish Super Lig

Galatasaray moved five points clear at the top of the Turkish Super Lig after a 2-0 win over Antalyaspor .

Burak Yilmaz bagged a brace, netting in the eighth minute and then again in the 62nd to help his side increase their lead over city rivals Besiktas.

Fenerbahce are six points off the pace as Pierre Webo's 45th-minute goal helped them to a 1-0 win at Mersin Idmanyurdu.

Sivasspor are sitting comfortably in mid-table after goals from Hakan Arsla (21) and Aatif Chahechouhe (57) saw them to a 2-0 triumph over Trabzonspor, for who Didier Zokora saw red with 20 minutes left.

In the days other game Kayserispor and Orduspor drew 0-0.

Greek Superleague

Panathinaikos' dismal season continued as they went down 1-0 at home to FC Xanthi, who climbed above them in the process.

The 20-time champions now find themselves four points shy of fifth place and the Champions League play-off places after Serge Die's 40th minute strike condemned them to defeat.

Giannina are the team to hold that fifth place following a 1-0 away win over Panionios.

Both sides ended with 10 men but it was Panionios who laboured a man down for longer, with Leonidas Kampantais receiving his marching orders after only 13 minutes.

Brana Ilic took advantage to put the visitors ahead five minutes later, and although a second yellow card earned Themistoklis Tzimopoulos an early bath just before the hour mark, they held out for victory.

The defeat increases Panionios' worries at the other end, with AEK Athens and Panthrakikos both winning to join them on 25 points and move out of immediate trouble.

Panthrakikos enjoyed a 3-0 win over Levadiakos, with Adrian Lucero's second-half brace - two goals in five minutes around the hour mark - killing the game off after Dimitrios Papadopoulos' first-half opener.

AEK Athens survived the second-half dismissal of Miguel Angel Cordero to win 1-0 away to basement dwellers Kerkyra.

Roger Guerreiro got the goal from the penalty spot after 14 minutes, and the lead held up despite Cordero's second yellow card in the 63rd minute.

Swiss Super League

Swiss champions Basle moved back within four points of Super League leaders Grasshoppers on Sunday afternoon thanks to a 3-0 home win over fourth-placed FC Sion.

Marco Streller put the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time, and further strikes early in the second period from substitute Mohamed Salah and Valentin Stocker put the result beyond doubt.

The win kept second-spotted Basle within touching distance of Grasshoppers, who triumphed 1-0 at bottom club Servette on Saturday.

In Sunday's other game in the Swiss top flight, FC Zurich - who started the day second from bottom - were 2-0 winners against Lausanne Sports. Amine Chermiti opened the scoring in the fifth minute and substitute Josip Drmic sealed matters at the death to lift Zurich to seventh.

Belgian Jupiler League

Anderlecht capitalised on Zulte-Waregem's slip on Saturday to move eight points clear at the top of the Jupiler League with a 2-1 away win over Waasland-Beveren.

After their nearest challengers were held away to Lokeren, Anderlecht did it the hard way, coming back in the second half after Jordan Remacle had given the lowly hosts a surprise lead four minutes before the break.

Dieumerci Mbokani levelled in the 57th minute and Kanu ended a nervous wait for Anderlecht fans with nine minutes left in the match.

Standard Liege fell further off the pace as the fifth-placed side went down 1-0 at home to Mons, Shlomi Arbeitman getting the goal after 18 minutes.

Portuguese Liga

Porto and Benfica remain locked together at the top of the Portuguese Liga after both were held to draws on Sunday.

Porto will be the more disappointed after only managing a 1-1 draw at home to lowly Olhanense, falling behind to Taigo Targino's strike after just seven minutes before Jackson Martinez levelled 10 minutes into the second half.

Benfica at least had the excuse of being away from home to face mid-table Nacional, but will hardly be satisfied after a match in which they finished with nine men.

They too fell behind early, with Diego Barcelos putting Nacional ahead after only six minutes, but Edson Sitoe Mexer's own goal levelled it soon after and Benfica led at the break thanks to Jonathan Urreta's strike.

Mateus levelled for Nacional eight minutes into the second half, and that is how it stayed despite a heated end to the match which saw Benfica's Oscar Cardozo dismissed in the 89th minute and then one from each side - Nacional's Fernando Marcal and Benfica's Nemanja Matic - seeing red in the final seconds.

At the other end of the table, Vitoria Setubal climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Gil Vicente - sealed by Pedro Santos' 24th minute strike - combined with a 3-0 loss for Beira Mar away to basement dwellers Moreirense.

Vitoria move on to 17 points, level with Olhanense and two clear of Beira Mar, three clear of Moreirense.

Anibal Capela put Moreirense ahead on the stroke of half-time before a brace from Nabil Ghilas in the second half.

Sporting's miserable season continued with a 1-0 home loss to Maritimo leaving them adrift in 10th place, Hyun-Jun Suk getting the goal in the 18th minute.

On-loan Manchester United forward Bebe scored his first league goal for Rio Ave as they won 2-1 away to Academica.

Salim Cisse scored for the hosts in the 51st minute to cancel out Ahmed Hassan's first-half opener, but Bebe got what proved to be the winner just four minutes later.

Academica's misery was completed by the last-minute dismissal of substitute Rafik Halliche, who collected two yellow cards in a five-minute cameo.
