The Swiss full-back benefitted from a nice backheel pass by Sebastian Giovinco in the 42nd minute to add to an early goal by Alessandro Matri. Chievo pulled one back after the break but could not follow their win over Lazio in the previous round with another upset on Sunday afternoon.

Lichtsteiner was also instrumental earlier in the season as he similarly netted the deciding goals against Palermo and Parma.

After the match, Lichtsteiner agreed that he has enjoyed being on the scoresheet for his team and was happy that his side have started the new month on a positive note.

"I'm consistently finding the target and I'm happy," Lichtsteiner told Sky Sport Italia.

"Today's [Sunday] victory was very important for us. We dropped many points in January, which was also down to an element of bad luck.

"We struggled a bit in the second half and could have handled things a little better after the restart.

"We're still top of the league, but we know we'll need to remain alert because Napoli are a great side, as are Lazio and Inter."

Chievo rarely threatened to score a second in the game and assistant coach Angelo Alessio stated that he was sure of securing the three points on the afternoon.

"We always had it under control and could've scored more," he commented.

"We conceded on our only distraction. There is no tension, we are relaxed."
