Victory narrow gap with derby triumph

Melbourne Victory closed the gap on A-League leaders Central Coast Mariners to three points with a 2-1 derby triumph over Melbourne Heart.

Thompson wheels away after opening the scoring!

Archie Thompson's 29th-minute opener and Mark Milligan's 56th-minute penalty put Victory in charge and even though Heart halved the deficit through David Williams 17 minutes from time, the hosts held on for the win.

At the other end of the table, Perth Glory replaced Wellington Phoenix in bottom spot after losing 1-0 to their fellow strugglers, Jeremy Brockie netting the only goal of the game four minutes before the break.

In Saturday's other match Newcastle Jets twice fought back from a goal down a late 2-2 draw from their home match with Sydney FC, penalties from Ryan Griffiths (16 and 89th minutes) cancelling out efforts from Alessandro Del Piero (12) and Blake Powell (57).
