Although his current contract expires at the end of the season, Lampard has made no secret of his desire to see out his playing career at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea interim manager Rafa Benitez called on the Englishman to prove his worth last weekend, and Lampard did so with great aplomb by scoring against Aston Villa in his 500th appearance in a Blues kit.
However, The Sun reported that it was too little too late for the 34-year old, who was encouraged to find another club in Janaury prior to kick-off in the game against Paul Lambert's men.
A Chelsea source told the English newspaper that Lampard was visably upset that his years of loyalty and service was lost on the Blues board: "Frank is absolutely distraught."
"He wants to keep playing for Chelsea but they've told him to find another club in the January transfer window. He can't believe it. All he wants to do is play for Chelsea. This club means everything to him."
Lampard has won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two Capital One Cups and the Champions League with Chelsea.
