The 20-year-old striker has already scored 14 goals near the halfway mark in the season, two more than Cavani, and has helped Milan stay in the running for Champions League qualification.
Milan sold star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic over the season but this has only helped El Shaarawy rise to the fore and he hopes to continue scoring and earn the Capocannoniere, the accolade awarded to the Serie A topscorer at the end of the season.
"I am having a good time this season. I am scoring a lot of goals," he told the Milan Channel.
"Hopefully this situation goes on for as long as possible.
"Do I aspire to the Capocannoniere?
"Well, staying ahead of the likes of Miroslav Klose and Edinson Cavani is a good feeling."
The youngster also gave his backing to coach Massimiliano Allegri who had come under fire for Milan's poor start to the season. Furthermore, he also expressed his hope that Robinho would stay on at the club amid reports that the Brazilian is seeking a return to his homeland in the January transfer window.
"Allegri has helped us overcome a crisis and the start of the season and deserves to stay on the bench," he continued.
"Robinho has been in good shape since he came back from injury and has helped us a lot. I hope he stays."
The Rossoneri play Roma in the final match of the year on Saturday and El Shaarawy warned against underestimating their opponents.
"Against Roma we will focus on the three points because we want to end the year with some success.
"It is going to be a tough challenge against an opponent who is very technical and have some great players.
"We will have to concentrate because they have the ability to take advantage of any space we may give them."
