Safee, who was the competition's leading goalscorer at the 2010 edition of Southeast Asia's premier tournament, is struggling to be ready thanks to a hamstring strain, leaving head coach K Rajagobal with a major selection headache.
Fellow forward, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha has not scored for two years at international level and, according to Rajagobal, Harimau Muda marksman Ahmad Hazwan Bakri, who bagged a hat-trick on his international debut against Sri Lanka in April, is not ready to be thrown in at the deep end.
"We are trying out different formations in case Safee can't play," Rajagobal told reporters on Friday.
"We'll see what the physio says and I hope he (Safee) can at least make the bench for Sunday and we'll have to see who is available," said Rajagobal.
"Hazwan is not what he used to be. There's a certain thing missing so I can't throw him into such an important match just like that. He has not shown what he did against Sri Lanka but you never know.
"The players have to show me something and he has not done anything to make me think I should put him in. If (Ahmad) Shakir Ali had not injured his hamstring, Hazwan would not even be here," Rajagobal added.
