The Ballon d'Or awards are widely considered to be a contest between three-time winner Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo but Cannavaro has argued the case for the Pirlo and Iniesta - the former reinvigorated Juventus to a scudetto-winning season while the latter was key in Spain's Euro 2012 win.
"I [don't think it is] between Messi and Ronaldo - I'd choose Pirlo or Iniesta," he said on Mundo Deportivo.
"Iniesta is amazing with Spain and has won the last two European Championships.
"Pirlo is extraordinary, and has not only won the Scudetto with Juventus but reached the final of Euro 2012 with Italy."
However, Cannavaro was ultimately realistic and admitted that it will be hard to combat the star power of Messi and Ronaldo.
"Of course I realise that it will be difficult for them to overcome two star players like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo," he added.
Both Pirlo and Iniesta have made the cut into the final 15 midfielders shortlisted for FIFA World XI.
