The Rossoneri have managed to win just four of their last 13 league games, and their shockingly disappointing form has seen them spiral down the Serie A table to 12th place.
Although AC Milan's poor run has caused a growing sense of anxiety amongst the club's fans, supporters have taken heart from the emergence of El Shaarawy. The striker is responsible for half of the goals Massimiliano Allegri's men have scored in the league so far, with his most recent strikes salvaging Milan a point in their 2-2 draw against Napoli.
Shevchenko admitted to La Gazetta dello Sport that he was very impressed with El Shaarawy's displays in this campaign.
"I didn’t know a lot about him until a few months ago, jnow I have been struck by his talent. I saw his performance against Napoli and the goals that he scored. They were great goals," Shevchenko shared.
"He’s a really mobile player, he knows how to move on the pitch and he’s good at defending too."
Having made his international bow for the Italian senior team in August, El Shaarawy got off the mark for the Azzurri during a recent friendly against France. While Cesare Prandelli's men were defeated by Les Bleus, Shevchenko believed the movement and link-up play displayed by the 20-year old was a hint that El Shaarawy could be an influential part of both his club and national set-up in the near future.
"He’s still very young, but if he continues like this, then, he will become a champion. He’ll be an important player for Milan and the national side," he said.
AC Milan travel to Anderlecht for their Champions League Group C fixture on Wednesday.
