Reina is set to return between the sticks for Liverpool when the Reds take on Wigan at Anfield on Saturday after having sat out the last five games owing to injury.

Brad Jones has filled in for the Reds in the former Villarreal player's absence, and the Australian's impressive displays in goal, coupled with Reina's poor early season form, have led to calls for Rodgers to permanently install Jones as the first-choice goalkeeper of the team.

However, Rodgers has come out to give his full backing to Reina and claims that the added competition provided by Jones will only help the Spain international to grow and improve as a player.

"I have absolutely no qualms about Pepe," Rodgers was quoted as saying by the Sun.

"He is intent on making himself a better keeper and when we have that, we have one of the best in Europe.

"It's all about confidence and losing confidence happens to every keeper - look at Joe Hart against Sweden.

"Pepe is our No 1 keeper and I know that he's committed and determined to continue at the top for the next nine or 10 years.

"But it's important for any player to know they have a challenge."

Liverpool have been poor in the league this season and currently lie 13th in the table.
