The Red Devils have clambered past Chelsea to top the Premier League table after wins against Arsenal and Aston Villa.
Although Manchester United are one of the favourites to lift the trophy this season, Rooney told Shortlist that Ferguson continues to urge the team to be diligent in their pursuit.
"The boss' words always hark back to hard work. People win things in football, in business, in life because they work hard and despite all the talent in the dressing room he makes us remember that we must put the hours in," he shared.
"The quality is there; you are Manchester United, of course it is. But what wins us things is effort."
Close to completing his eighth year at Old Trafford, the Englishman has lined up alongside several talented forwards including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy. However, Rooney revealed that it was Frenchman Louis Saha that he took most pleasure in playing with.
"There are so many but I'm going to say Louis Saha. He was a fantastic player, a real handful for anyone and I just really enjoyed playing off him," he said.
"He was so lively, a real striker who made great runs in behind and who was always making space for others."
Manchester United travel to Carrow Road to take on Norwich for their Premier League fixture this weekend.
