The 33-year-old joined the Chinese Super League outfit from Chelsea in January 2012 on a free transfer.
British tabloid The Sun claims Anelka is unsettled in China and "would prefer another tilt at the Premier League".
It reports that QPR, currently rock bottom in England's top flight, see the former France international as the man who can help fire them to safety this season.
Anelka is reportedly on £250,000 per week wages in China but The Sun believes QPR owner Tony Fernandes, who has spent millions on players this season already, would not be put off by the Frenchman's huge salary.
According to Shanghai Shenhua's website, Anelka has played 22 games for the club, scoring three goals and also managing six assists.
Anelka had previously been linked with a move away from Shanghai but he denied those reports by declaring that he would stay at the club until he retires.
