Though the former Wolfsburg player has started just three Premier League games for Manchester City this season, Dzeko has proven to be a deadly option for manager Roberto Mancini to call up from the bench, scoring in almost every substitute appearance he has made for the defending champions so far.

After his 88th minute strike helped see off Tottenham last Sunday, Dzeko admitted to the media that he hoped his goals would convince his manager to name him in the starting 11 more often, as he was keen to shed his "super-sub" image.

Barry told the Daily Telegraph that he was not surprised by Dzeko's comments and he confessed that the striker's plight was not one he would enjoy being in.

"If I was Edin I'd have said exactly the same thing, he is a great player. Although that's the way it's panned out this season, he's come on in a lot of games and scored vital goals, he still doesn't deserve to be called a supersub," Barry stated.

"It's tough to be honest, I obviously think I should always be picked. Every player thinks he's good enough to be playing every week."

The midfielder also admitted that the team's first season as Premier League champions was no walk in the park.

"I think in terms of winning that first title it was a weight off everyone's shoulders, but it counts for nothing this year. You have to start again. That can be hard, psychologically," Barry explained.

"Everyone's expecting you to be playing fantastic football, winning every game and course it doesn't happen like that. Teams are upping their game against us, you can sense people thinking: right they've got this fantastic squad, let's test ourselves against these."

Manchester City welcome Aston Villa to the Etihad Stadium for their Premier League meeting this weekend.
