Afellay joined Schalke on loan during the summer and has already established himself as a key player in the team, with the Dutch forward making 13 appearances and scoring four goals for Die Königsblauen this season.
This marks a remarkable upturn in fortunes for the 26-year-old; Afellay was written off by many as a has-been after his well-documented struggles with injuries during his time at Barcelona saw him feature only 34 times for the Blaugrana in two seasons.
Although Schalke general manager Horst Heldt previously expressed his intention of keeping the former PSV winger at the Veltins-Arena, Afellay has declared he does not intend to stay on in Germany and wants to return and ply his trade at Barcelona.
Speaking to OnsOranje.nl, Afellay said: "It is my goal to return to Barcelona.
"When I look back at my time at the club, I can only be positive about it.
"We always had so much fun on the training pitch. When I returned home after a practice session, I could hardly wait for the next day.
"You really notice that you are improving as a player."
Afellay also revealed that he was still in contact with several Barcelona players and admitted he could not wait to play with the best players in the world again.
"I still speak with guys like Andres Iniesta and Xavi on a regular basis," Afellay added.
"They are among the best players in the world. [Lionel] Messi is the best of the best.
"They are extremely committed. There's no other way, though, if you are to perform at such a high level."
Afellay will be expected to feature when Schalke take on Werder Bremen in their next Bundesliga fixture.
