Hamburg, Nuremberg prepare for battle

Hamburg and Nuremberg are readying themselves for a relegation battle on Sunday, with both clubs in desperate need of points to pull away from danger.

Hamburg currently occupy the relegation play-off berth, just a point above the drop zone, while Nuremberg are three points ahead in 14th.

"It's a special game for us because it's one in which we can overtake them," said Hamburg coach Mirko Slomka, whose side's goal difference is superior to Nuremberg's, meaning they would move above their opponents with a win.

"That's got to be evident on the field and then in the league table afterwards."

His Nuremberg counterpart Gertjan Verbeek does not believe the game is all that special, saying that "nothing gets decided in this game" and that "there are enough matches after to get points in".

Nevertheless, the Dutchman would not turn down a six-point cushion over Hamburg by virtue of his club's third away win of the season.

"We ran Bremen ragged at times and I was pleased with the way we played then," he said.

"If we do that again, then Hamburg are going to have problems with us."

Verbeek will be able to rely on regular goalkeeper Raphael Schafer, who needed to be replaced at half-time of last weekend's 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen.

"I've got no reason to complain about our injury situation," said Verbeek, who is still without Timothy Chandler, Daniel Ginczek and Timo Gebhart.

"I'm just sorry for the players."

Hamburg are still without their top goalscorer Pierre-Michel Lasogga, but Petr Jiracek could be back in the squad after injury.
