Kalou: England needs a leader like Terry

Salomon Kalou has told us he wants to see his former Chelsea captain make an international comeback for the World Cup.

Terry's last England appearance was in a 5-0 victory over Moldova in a World Cup qualifier on 7 September 2012.

Later that month the central defender made himself unavailable for international duty after being charged by the English Football Association of using racially abusive language towards Anton Ferdinand. Terry at the time said his position in Roy Hodgon's team was "untenable".

Kalou believes the 33-year-old is "a great leader" and still refers to him affectionately as 'JT'.

"Of course [England should select him for Brazil] as a player like Terry changes a lot of things.

"If you want to succeed in these competitions you have to take people who can have a positive effect on the team - he is a great leader.

"There are a lot of young players in the [England] team which means you need a leader like him - someone to direct the young players".

Terry is enjoying an outstanding partnership in defence for Chelsea this season with current England international Gary Cahill. They kept a clean sheet in Monday's 1-0 victory away to Manchester City and have conceded only 13 league goals in 2013/14 when paired together for an entire match.

Mourinho has labelled his skipper "amazing" and "the best" in the past seven days - before and after victory over title rivals City - but was guarded on the subject of an England comeback.

"Now it is up to the FA, to Roy and to John. The decision they make is the decision I accept".

Kalou saw Chelsea outplay Manuel Pellegrini's City at his home in Lille on television and disagrees with Mourinho's opinion that his old team cannot win the Premier League this season.

"Jose has shown once again that he is a class manager as no one expected him to pick the midfield he did for City. And it worked so well.

"If you can beat a team like City in their own stadium then you can go on to win the title."
