Lieberknecht: Injury-hit Dortmund are still strong

Eintracht Braunschweig coach Torsten Lieberknecht does not expect Borussia Dortmund to be any weaker on Friday night without three injured players.

Mats Hummels of Dortmund

Defender Mats Hummels could make his comeback to the Dortmund side after two months out but the Westphalians are still missing several key players.

When they arrive at the Eintracht Stadion, Dortmund will be without Jakub Blaszczykowski, Neven Subotic and Ilkay Gundogan.

That does not make them any easier to beat, though, according to Lieberknecht.

"I would have preferred it if they had brought the whole orchestra with them, but even with the orchestra they've got, they can play a decent Blues," said Lieberknecht.

"Everybody knows that Dortmund have one of the best sides in the world with an abundance of strength.

"If we want to win, then we've got to do something superhuman."

That is not to say that Lieberknecht, whose side have been propping up the division almost since day one, is writing off his side's chances altogether.

Having seen Hertha Berlin win and Augsburg draw at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund's last two matches, he knows it is not a completely lost cause.

"We're very ambitious and will try all we can on Friday to collect points," Lieberknecht added.

Bidding to stop them could be Hummels, who is back in the frame after a two-month injury absence.

"He's made a very good impression, although that doesn't surprise me since he's trained three times with the team already," said Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp on Thursday.

Dortmund trail league leaders Bayern Munich by 17 points and can practically write off their hopes of winning the title this season, but their place in the Champions League next season is coming under threat.

Defeat on Friday could see Dortmund slip out of the top four this weekend.

"We want to play just a bit better than in our last game," Klopp said at a press conference. "And we will succeed in doing that too."
