The Schalke striker has not played this season and underwent surgery for the second time last month after again damaging his knee in his first full training session back after an eight-week lay-off.
Huntelaar had been scheduled to return in time for Schalke's mid-season training camp in January, but he believes it will be at least an extra month before he can pick up full training again.
"I want to be back on the training field in February," he told Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant.
Despite such a lengthy time on the sidelines though, the 30-year-old is not getting concerned that he could miss out on the World Cup.
"If I am fit, then I'll be going to the World Cup," he told the Bild newspaper. "We'll just have to wait and see, but I always think positively."
