St Etienne went to the top of Ligue 1 after beating Valenciennes 3-1 on Saturday night.
Two goals from Benjamin Corgnet, who scored either side of a 25-yard strike from Romain Hamouma, saw the visitors win well. they were denied a clean sheet only by an 80th-minute penalty from substitute Maor Melikson.
Corgnet opened the scoring after 17 minutes, Hamouma doubled the lead in the 47th minute, and six minutes later Corgnet netted again.
Unbeaten Monaco have the opportunity on Sunday to reclaim first place when they tackle Lorient.
