Having failed to pick up three points in their 16 outings prior to the weekend, the Deer already look destined to be relegated to the Premier League come the end of the season.
And although it was always going to be unlikely that they would go the entire campaign without recording a win, few gave them a chance to beat title-chasing ATM at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium on Saturday evening.
But they got off to a dream start when Fauzi Nan handed them the lead after just two minutes, although the hosts equalised in the 14th minute when captain Hairuddin Omar struck his fifth goal of the season.
But six minutes later, Nazrin Nawi scored to restore Negri Sembilan's lead, and with the Armed Forces unable to find a second equaliser, it was the visitors who held on for an unlikely triumph.
The result leaves ATM two points behind leaders LIONSXII, who have a game in hand, while the Deer are now five points away from safety.
Defending champions Kelantan's hopes of retaining the title are almost mathematically over after they played out a 1-1 draw at home to Selangor, who also face a tough task in their bid to overtake the LIONSXII.
Following a goalless first half at the Sultan Mohammad IV Stadium, it was the Red Giants who drew first blood when Australian defender Adam Griffiths headed home a Raimi Nor corner to open his account for his new side.
But 11 minutes later, Zairo Anuar Zalani came off the bench to fire home a 25-yard effort into the bottom corner and earn a share of the spoils for Kelantan.
Finally, PKNS FC climbed three spots up to sixth following a crushing 5-0 win over FELDA United at the Shah Alam Stadium.
After Fauzan Dzulkifli had opened the scoring for hosts in the 33rd minute, Khairu Azrin Khazali netted to hand them a comfortable lead at the break.
Five minutes after the restart, Patrick Ronaldinho Wleh netted his 10th goal of the season to make it 3-0, before Roman Chmelo added a fourth for PKNS a minute before the hour mark.
Although the three points were well and truly in the bag by then, there was still time for the Selangor-based side to grab a fifth; Nizad Ayub getting in on the act in the 89th minute to round off the scoring for his side.
