With less than a minute on the clock, Tok Gajah opened the scoring at the Darulmakmur Stadium after PKNS keeper Remezy Che Ros spilled a poor cross from R. Gopinathan, allowing Conti to pounce and fire home the loose ball.
However, the visitors equalised six minutes after the half-hour mark when Patrick Ronaldinho Wleh met a Fauzan Dzulkifli freekick and sent a firm header into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the tournament.
And just a minute later, PKNS took the lead after Khairu Azrin latched onto Wleh's through-ball and fired in a shot that was too hot for Khairul Azhan Khalid to handle, paving the way for Lot Abu Hassan to score on the rebound.
But to their credit, Pahang showed excellent resolve after the break despite having had their lead overturned, and made it 2-2 in the 50th minute when Conti nodded home an R. Surendran cross.
On a forgettable night for both goalkeepers, the winner then arrived seven minutes later when Conti completed his hat-trick after Remezey had failed to gather a relatively tame shot from Amirulhadi Zainal, handing Pahang the slimmest of leads ahead of next week's return encounter at the Shah Alam Stadium.
