Woodgate a doubt for Preston clash

Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate is a major doubt for Tuesday night's Capital One Cup third-round trip to League One Preston.

The 32-year-old former England international, who has been plagued by injuries during his career to date, is likely to miss out with a hamstring strain picked up during Friday night's 2-1 npower Championship victory at Blackburn.

Keeper Jason Steele could also miss out with a calf problem suffered during the game at Ewood Park, while defender Adam Reach and striker Ishmael Miller are also doubtful.

Reach (ankle) and Miller (groin) did not play at Blackburn and while the former is unlikely to return at Deepdale, the latter is being assessed.

Striker Curtis Main (knee) and defender Rhys Williams (ankle) are both out for the foreseeable future after undergoing surgery.

Chris Beardsley continues to be unavailable for Preston. The former Stevenage striker missed the 3-1 defeat at Walsall on Saturday with a hamstring injury, and is expected to be sidelined for a further seven days.

John Welsh, Paul Huntington and skipper John Mousinho all showed no side effects on their return to the side from injury at Banks's Stadium.

The Saddlers clash was Mousinho's first start since the opening day of the season when he tore his hamstring, and he completed 81 minutes without concern.

Striker Lee Trundle (knee) and winger Lee Holmes (gashed leg) remain on the sidelines.

North End manager Graham Westley made six changes to his starting line-up for the second-round victory against Crystal Palace and is expected to rotate his squad again.
