Grp D: Club Brugge vs Maritimo Preview

Club Brugge midfielder Victor Vazquez is hoping fine domestic form can help kick-start their Europa League campaign against Maritimo on Thursday.

Football News: Club Brugge

The Blauw-Zwart lie top of the Jupiler League after winning six and drawing three of their opening nine games.

Brugge's unbeaten domestic form has yet to translate on to the European stage, though, and they suffered their heaviest ever defeat in the competition at Bordeaux on matchday one.

Vazquez wants to make amends for that 4-0 loss in France in Thursday's Group D encounter with Portuguese outfit Maritimo at the Jan Breydelstadion.

"Life is good and we enjoy the clear title ambition of the club," the Spaniard told the club's official website, www.clubbrugge.be.

"More than ever, winning the league is all that matters. That's the only thing that counts for the club as well as me.

"Thanks to this draw we remain two points in front of our arch rivals Anderlecht and it boosts our confidence for the game on Thursday.

"We have to show that we are worth our spot in Europe. The game in Bordeaux was painful. We lost three points, but no more than that.

"At home against Maritimo we have to get the three points in the bag. Our fans deserve it.

"The European campaign has just started and is far from settled."

Vazquez could be joined in the starting line-up by Fredrik Stenman, who has returned to training after illness.

Jesper Jorgensen is another looking to overcome illness but Club Brugge will be without Mohamed Tchite, who will be sidelined for the next two weeks with a thigh injury.

Maritimo coach Pedro Martins has a major injury concern of his own and has taken 19 players to Belgium due to doubts over Rafael Miranda's fitness.

The Brazilian midfielder will have a thigh complaint assessed at the Jan Breydelstadion on Wednesday evening to see if he is fit to feature.
