Podolski remains Arsenal's only signing so far for the new season and fans are excited at the prospect of seeing the former Cologne midfielder link up with the likes of Tomas Rosicky, Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott.
In Euro 2012, they were hoping to catch a sneak preview of their new signing in action but so far his performances have not really been praiseworthy with Thomas Muller, Mario Gomez and Bastian Schweinsteiger stealing the show instead, especially in Die Mannschaft's 2-1 win over the Netherlands on Wednesday.
Mertesacker called on fans to be patient and remains convinced of his team-mate's ability to be a match-winner. He noted how the Germany international had to be focused on his defensive duties in the game with Arjen Robben a significant threat down the left flank. He had been tasked to help out Philipp Lahm.
"Defensively it was a great game from Lukas," Mertesacker told Arsenal.com.
"He had to cover for Philippe Lahm, with Arjen Robben on his flank, and he did it very well.
"Especially in the first half, he covered him all the time and it was two against one on Robben.
"I think that was more important than his attacking qualities. But every Arsenal fan will soon see what he can do offensively."
Arsenal captain Van Persie was on the losing side despite scoring a scorcher of a goal. Mertesacker was happy that his club team-mate did not get to celebrate a win but insisted that the two continue to respect one another despite being heated rivals on the day.
"The goal wasn't enough for Holland, and that's good for us," said the defender.
"But our relationship is very good, very respectful, and it was nice to see him - we had a good conversation.
"He's fit and I'm going to be 100 per cent soon, so it will be great to join up again for pre-season at Arsenal."
The Arsenal centre-back has yet to play a part in Euro 2012 as Germany coach Joachim Low has opted for the central defensive pairing of Mats Hummels and Holger Badstuber. But he is happy to bide his time and stated that he would "try to do my best" in order to stake a claim in the starting XI in future matches.
