Ozil was part of the German U-21 side that won the European Championships in 2009 and he is looking to recreate that success at senior level after losing out to Spain in the final four years ago and in the semi-final of the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

He told Bild: "It has been the best season of my career. The feeling of winning a title with Real Madrid was incredible, but the campaign hasn't finished yet. Now I want to win the European Championships.

"My feelings are good. Our goal is the title. If it wasn't we wouldn't go to compete. The conditions for preparing ourselves are perfect and we are totally concentrated on the tournament.

"We were runners-up in 2008 and third in 2010. We failed in our aim and, therefore, finishing second would be a disappointment."

Ozil has come across as one of the quieter characters in the Real side during his two years in Spain but said he feels very comfortable in the squad and is only looking to improve his game, starting with building on his physical prowess.

"I am taking a lot of care with my body, but I have to be careful that in building my strength I don't lose my speed," he said. "In Real Madrid there are players with great physique, but Cristiano Ronaldo is unique. Moreover, he is a great and very helpful person.

"In the Real Madrid dressing room you feel very comfortable, everyone is telling jokes. It doesn't matter how big the institution is, the players have their feet on the ground."
