Fabio Capello's men only managed a 0-0 draw at Wembley when the two sides last met, but travel to Podgorica knowing a similar result will be enough to secure their place at next year's finals in Poland and Ukraine.
However, Montenegro have plenty to play for, with third-placed Switzerland, who travel to play Wales on Friday, just three points behind them in Group G.
One team already through to next year's finals are Germany, who hold an insurmountable lead in Group A. They travel to play second-placed Turkey on Friday, who will be eager to maintain the two-point gap between themselves and Belgium, who have a relative straightforward home game against bottom side Kazakhstan.
The group's other fixture sees Azerbaijan play hosts to Austria.
In Group C, Italy have also booked their place in Poland and Ukraine next summer, but will be looking to dent the hopes of second-placed Serbia, who are just a point ahead of Estonia, having played once game less.
The Estonians travel to play Northern Ireland.
There is still plenty up for grabs in Group B, with four sides still in the running for the automatic qualifying berth.
At the moment, Russia lead the way on 17 points but they face a testing encounter away to Slovakia, who are fourth in the group standings but just three points behind their opponents.
Second-placed Republic of Ireland travel to play Andorra, while Armenia, who are a mere point behind the Irish entertain Macedonia.
Things are also going down to the wire in Group D, as France and Bosnia-Herzegovina battle for top spot.
Laurent Blanc's side are currently in front by a point, and are at home to Albania, while Bosnia-Herzegovina entertain bottom side Luxembourg.
Third-placed Romania, who still have a chance of claiming second place, host Belarus.
Holland face no such problems, having all but sealed qualification for next year's finals. They entertain Moldova on Friday evening, while Sweden will look to consolidate their grip on second place when they travel to play Finland.
Greece's home encounter against Croatia is looming as one of the more decisive clashes of the round, with the latter leading the hosts at the top of the Group F standings by a mere point.
Elsewhere in the group, Malta travel to play Latvia.
Three teams are tied at the top of Group H, but with Norway not in action until next Tuesday, Portugal and Denmark will be looking to push ahead in their respective matches against Iceland and Cyprus respectively.
And finally in Group I, Spain, who have already booked their spot in next summer's championships, travel to play a Czech Republic side still in the hunt for second place, although Scotland, who are just two points behind, will be confident in their chances of beating Liechtenstein on Saturday.
