With 20-year old Gotze set to leave Borussia Dortmund for Bayern Munich in the summer, the German international could have marked his last game for the club by winning the Champions League, only for a muscular problem picked up during the semi-final clash against Real Madrid to cost him an appearance at Wembley.
Despite Gotze's absence, Grosskreutz told Bild that his team still stood a chance of defeating their fierce Bavarian rivals.
"It's very bitter that Mario can't play. I feel really sorry for him, especially as he also missed last year's DFB-Pokal final. But we should not forget that we also won that game without him," he pointed out.
"We are once more the underdogs, but I don't mind that role to be honest. I know very well what we are capable of."
