Thiago Silva struck early to put the hosts in front on the 30-minute mark but they were pegged back by Jackson Martinez's equaliser minutes later. They looked in control for most of the match and eventually found a winning goal as Ezequiel Lavezzi scored in the 60th minute to hand the French side a 2-1 win.

Ancelotti was pleased with the result which came at the back of a 2-1 defeat against Nice in the Ligue 1 over the weekend which ensured that they avoid tricky fixtures like Barcelona, Manchester United and Bayern Munich in the next round.

"It was a good match, a good reaction from the team [to Saturday's 2-1 defeat by OGC Nice]," he told Uefa's official website, "We showed our style, character and courage. We played against a team with good organisation and we controlled the game.

"We showed all the things I want to see from this team. Some may have assessed this team too early, but this is a team that has quality. When you want to build something important, you cannot reach your target immediately. One must be a little patient."

However, Ancelotti admitted that they could improve on their performances in the league having dropped to fourth place.

"For the moment, our performances are not good in the league, but we still have time to improve." he concluded.
