Messi is currently a goal short of the tally after scoring a brace against Athletic Bilbao over the weekend and he looks likely to break the record when Barcelona face Benfica on Wednesday night.

Barcelona have already secured top spot in their group and can afford to take it easy but Adriano has declared that the entire team will be behind Messi in trying to help him break the record.

"We will be with him and will try to do everything possible towards that. The goal is to go out and win the match and to see Messi equal the record," he told a press conference.

"It is best not to think about it and to not be obsessed, but to instead play normally. Leo thinks the same, whilst we want to help.

"But, Leo is demonstrating each season that he wants to do his best and in seeing this, especially in light of what he has already achieved, it makes us want to give our best in every game to help make this possible. He is a phenomenon."

Barcelona have had a phenomenal season so far, recording 13 wins and a draw in La Liga to make the best start in the history of the Spanish league while also having sealed qualification as winners of their Champions League group.

Adriano believes that the current squad can be compared to the wildly successful one under Pep Guardiola while also adding that last season's lack of trophies was down to poor luck.

"This team can be compared to the Barcelona of Guardiola, I think so. We are at a very good level, but we still have room for improvement," he said.

"This is what we have tried in every game so far. Last year with Pep we were playing well, but did not have the same luck with the ball."
