Lewandowski calls for Pepe to "play fair"

Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski is hoping Real Madrid's Pepe plays a clean game when the two sides meet in their Champions League Group D encounter.

Pepe was at the centre of a recent controversy when he insinuated that Barcelona's Andres Iniesta put on a "theatre performance" by exaggerating the extent of the challenges he endured. Although Iniesta's Barcelona team-mate Martin Montoya rejected the Real Madrid defender's claim, the issue sparked rumours that the Catalans possessed a video cataloguing Pepe's fouls which had gone unnoticed by the referee, an accusation denied by Iniesta.

With Pepe's reputation taking a nosedive since the incident, Lewandowski called for the centre-back to play by the rules when they come in direct opposition to each other.

"I don't fear Madrid's defenders, I can guarantee you that. I know perfectly well what kind of defenders they are, and I'm not afraid," he shared with AS.

"I just hope Pepe plays fair. I don't have any problems with him then."

In Dortmund's previous Champions League fixture, the Bundesliga champions nearly saw off Manchester City, and Lewandowski revealed that he did not view their next European opposition as a better side than the Premier League winners.

"It will be hard to say whether Madrid are a more difficult opponent than Manchester City. They are an absolute top team and it will not be an easy game," he stated.

"They have some of the best players in the world, and they can all be dangerous. There's no reason to fear them, though. I hope that it will be a nice show, with us coming out on top."

Borussia Dortmund welcome Real Madrid for their Champions League game on Wednesday.
