Bayern were pipped to the Bundesliga title by Borussia Dortmund for the second year in a row last season, with Die Borussen eventually finishing eight points ahead of the Bavarians.
To compound their miserable season, Die Roten narrowly missed out on a Champions League title as after losing to Chelsea in the finals of the competition via the lottery of a penalty shoot-out.
The Bavarians are expected to challenge on both fronts once again this season but Rummenigge has stated that he would prefer if his side captured the Bundesliga title as compared to the Champions League title.
Speaking to TZ, Rummenigge said: "Our top priority is to be crowned German champions in the 50th Bundesliga season.
"The Bundesliga title is the fairest one there is.
"In the Champions League, luck and form of the day play a huge role as well.
"Otherwise, the Champions League trophy would be standing at the Sabener Strasse right now."
The former German international also claimed that Die Roten would have to get over their Champions League final loss to the Blues in order to do well this season.
"We have to forget about last year, though, and make a fresh start," Rummenigge added.
"We are very motivated and are eager to win the Champions League. But May 2013 is still a long way, so we're not thinking about that just yet."
Bayern made a good start to their Champions League campaign on Wednesday, beating Valencia 2-1 courtesy of goals by Bastian Schweinsteiger and Toni Kroos.
