Using defensive tactics against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final as they did when taking on Barcelona in the semi-finals, Chelsea hung on by the skin of their teeth throughout most of the game. The Blues eventually defeated their German opponents on penalties to lift the trophy. Despite winning the competition for the first time in their history, Cruyff does not believe the club should be proud of the manner of their triumph.
"Only Chelsea fans will be happy with this, for the rest, nobody can be happy with the outcome of the Champions League final." Cruyff said to De Telegraaf.
"What especially bothers me is that a football team can forget everything and still win."
Part of the original generation of "Total Footballers", the Dutchman went further in his criticism by insisting that he would have rather not win the competition if he was forced to play in the tactic employed by Roberto Di Matteo's squad.
"I'd choose to take the steps we take at Ajax, towards the football that we all want to see," Cruyff stated.
"And then if there's no Champions League win? Better not to have the trophy in this way."
